As we’ve been discussing of late, WordPress has many free themes available. For start-up websites, new business and those just looking into the web, these can be a great starting option. However, to present a really professional image to your visitors, you’ll likely want to create either a customized or completely custom theme.
One of the best things about WordPress is that you can design and implement a new theme seamlessly, without any changes to your content or CMS tools. This means that you can start with a basic WordPress theme, do some customizations when you are ready for it, and then eventually add a custom design to your site. After a few years, you can create a completely new custom theme and overlay it. This removes any learning curve for you or your staff, as the tools you are using always stay the same.
At AWEBthatWORKS, we offer customization services, in which we basically start with a theme you’ve found on the WordPress site (or elsewhere), and customize it to suit your brand. These customizations can be as simple as integrating your logo or as complex as reworking the colours, lay-out, etc.
You can also create a completely custom theme. Working with a graphic designer, you’ll create a graphic version of how you’d like your final site to look. This will contain all the common imagery used on every page, a layout all of the fonts used on the site, etc. A theme programmer will then take this graphic file and transform it into a full custom theme for your site. With custom themes, the sky is the limit. Depending on the design, you may need to source new plugins, or do some custom programming to get everything running, but this really showcases WordPress at its best.
One last thing to consider: perhaps you already have a great website, but you want to create a blog, or perhaps you don’t have access to update the site yourself. A theme programmer can work with your existing look and create a theme for your blog which is seamless with your existing site – or even transfer your content into WordPress so you have all of those advantages.
If you need any help with customizing the look of your WordPress site, we’d love to help.
