Requiring featured images on your WordPress posts

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but all of our posts have featured images.  ALL OF THEM.  This isn’t an accident.  There are a number of reasons why having featured images is a good idea, but the major one is that when your content is shared on social media, you want it shared with an image included.  It will garner more attention in peoples’ packed timelines, illustrate your point better, and just plain look nicer.

Confession time – at least half the time I forget to add one, and I publish it and then scramble frantically to get one up there before anyone notices.  To save myself this headache, I’ve installed a plugin, called Require Featured Image.  Simply install and activate, and you’re ready to go!

Basically this means our team can no longer publish posts without featured images.  Firstly, we’ll get a red warning bar at the top of the screen, and the Publish button is greyed out.  This doesn’t become available until a featured image is added.

Whether you’re adding this simply as a reminder to yourself, or to ensure your social media team isn’t forgetting, this is invaluable.

There is another option for this called Force Featured Image which has some extra customization available, but this one requires some custom programming to activate it.

I know that not all of you have a huge selection of beautiful imagery to choose from.  You may want to simply add your logo each time.  Or, invest in purchasing or creating a selection of images which represent your field/products/services/company, and use them as appropriate.  You may wish to hire a designer to curate this collection for you.

If you need some help pumping up the visual elements on your website, our talented designers would be happy to help.  Contact us today for a free consultation.
