But hang on just a tick. Don’t click that ‘Insert’ button quite yet. Take a moment and add a meaningful title, as well as some alt text. There are a few reasons:
- The alt text is used by screen readers to describe an image to someone who is visually-challenged. This helps give them a better experience on your site
- The alt text can be seen if image loading is turned off, or if there is a delay in the connection. This gives those visitors a chance to decide if your image is worth waiting for.
- ‘Alt text’ is used by search engines, most notably Google, to check the content on your page. Using a good description here, which includes your keywords, can help boost your ranking. By ‘good’ I mean short, to the point, and not just trying to shove in as many keywords as you can.
- This is a selfish reason, but if you’re blogging regularly, you’ll quite possibly want to use this image again… but maybe not for a year or two… or five. Adding in a useful title and keyword allow the search tool to work, and when you search for ‘that guy’ in 5 years and it pops right up, you’ll be so impressed with yourself.
Last tip, start doing this NOW! The longer you wait, the more work it is going to be to go back and try to catch up on all those old ones. TRUST ME, I’ve done it, and I’d like to save you from the same fate!
Speaking of going back and catching up… we’re happy to help with this, or even just help you come up with some good keywords which you should be integrating. Contact us to find out more.
